Town and Country Planning

The Town & Country Planning Unit was established in Puducherry during November 1965 under the Directorate of Public Works for drawing up Development Plans initially for Puducherry and Karaikal and subsequently for Mahe and Yanam. Since enormous developments had come within as well as outside the urban areas of the Union Territory and in order to control the spatial developments, a separate organization in the name of Town and Country Planning Unit started functioning independently during 1966 headed by the Senior Town Planner. Subsequently, the Sub-Offices were set up in Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in March 1974, November 1979 and June 1983 respectively.The Puducherry Town and Country Planning Act was enacted on 20-5-1970.The Puducherry Building Bye-Laws and Zoning Regulations formulated on 9-9-1972.The Puducherry Town and Country Planning Rules was enacted on 18-4-1974.The Town and Country Planning Department is Responsible for the balance growth of the urban and rural areas in the U.T. of Puducherry through preparation and implementation of Development Plans. Advise and assist the Government and semi-government agencies in connection with physical Planning and Development schemes in the U.T. of Puducherry.
