Hindu Religious Institutions and Wakf

The Department of Hindu Religious Institutions & Wakf is one of the Department of Government of Puducherry which has been established in the year 1980 after bifurcation from the Local Administration Department, Puducherry in order to protect, oversee and administer the 243 temples (purview temples) in the Union Territory of Puducherry and their movable and immovable properties in a proper manner as per the Puducherry Hindu Religious Institutions Act, 1972 and Rules, 1975. In addition, about 1000 public temples not coming under the purview of this Department are also being administered indirectly by this Department.

The Puducherry State Wakf Board, being under the administrative control of Department of Hindu Religious Institutions and Wakf, has exclusively been established for muslim community by the Government of Puducherry as per directives of Central Wakf Council of India in order to protect, manage and regulate the wakf properties of 45 registered mosques in the Union Territory of Puducherry as per the Wakf Act, 1995 and rules framed thereunder.

The Puducherry Haj Committee, being under the administrative control of Department of Hindu Religious Institutions and Wakf has been constituted by the Government of Puducherry for the purpose of making arrangements to the muslim people in the U.T. of Puducherry so as to perform Islamic pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia from Puducherry as per the Haj Committee Act, 2002.
